Festival of Extreme Building Takes Over
On Saturday 9th June 2007 the launch of The Festival of Extreme Building 2007 will take place. Members of the public will witness a huge processional performance led by Bollywood ‘Dance Masters’ Hena & Co. through the city centre culminating at the Festival site at the gateway between Birmingham’s central retail hub and the new £6billion Eastside.
The six-month experiment in design and experimental structures will establish a no holds barred ‘Free Zone’ where Birmingham’s citizens, private sector developers and Local Authorities can create structures and explore architectural ideas that will reflect their visions of what give a city its magic. A number of innovative projects will take place during The Festival of Extreme Building 2007.
The centre-piece of the Festival will be Professor Richard Harden’s (Horden Cherry Lee Architects) high specification and ergonomically designed micro-compact home. The micro-compact home crosses the boundaries between art, architecture, sculpture and function and as part of the festival members of the public will have the opportunity to win a night in the home to experience a state of the art dwelling for themselves.
Throughout the project the Festival will be commissioning a number of established professionals to support the efforts of local people. A 12m sq ‘Fashion House’, designed by Will Alsop and intended to inspire participants in their own design thinking will be installed on site, as we as many other works. Festival curator Dave Pollard said: “This festival will broker genuinely new co-operative working relationships between the developers funding this adventure, regeneration and design professionals, the local authority and the people of Birmingham. I am genuinely excited to see how the project develops and to be part of the many wonderful structures that will appear as part of the Festival.” If the Festival is successful in its inaugural year it could lead to a permanent home for its activities in Birmingham’s proposed £25million, 8 acre Eastside Park. The Festival of Extreme Building is the physical manifestation of the future aspirations of key stakeholders operating in Birmingham’s flagship Eastside Regeneration Zone.
