An innovative event of national and international interest, Blast will be the centre-piece of the City’s Artsfest Programme.
Drawing on Birmingham’s industrial heritage and in celebration of its future, a team of artists with a long track record of staging unique large scale events world wide conceived two unforgettable evenings using sound, light, projected images and fire.
The event will be staged on a site which includes the disused Curzon Street Station building constructed in 1838, currently the world’s oldest surviving piece of monumental railway architecture, which remained in use as a goods station till 1966. Standing on a flattened concrete wasteland awaiting redevelopment, behind the grand empty building of the Curzon Station the artists started to conceive the Blast project. Whilst imagining what the area would have been like over one hundred years ago they decided that before the site is re-invented for the 21st century, they will make it resonate once again to the sounds, images and raw energy of the industrial revolution.
On the site of the oldest railway station in Birmingham, the Blast team presents an aural explosion in celebration of the City’s steam-driven past.
Fire and water combine, creating an explosive mixture of steam, sound, fire and pyrotechnic marvels. Come and experience the awe-inspiring Large Hot Pipe Organ, the unforgettable Orchestrated Steam Whistles, and the Fire Horns, the Percussion Engine, Pyrotechnic Whistles, Flying Rockets, Pyrophones and Balls of Fire. Immerse yourselves in sounds, sights, smells and raw energy evoking ‘an age of miracles in which anything could be achieved.’
