Ikon Offsite presents Chandelier, a major work by Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi, on one of Birmingham’s main commuter routes from 8th – 15th November. This stunning work consists of six full-scale lamp posts that have been conjoined, inverted and hoisted into the air by an industrial crane to create an oversize chandelier, illuminating the winter night sky in a cartoon-like gesture.
Situated on Curzon Street Circle, part of Birmingham’s central road network, the work will be visible from various points around the city centre as well as from the trains entering or heading out of Birmingham on the West Coast Main Lane.
Nishi is renowned for his major architectural installations that radically shift the viewer’s perspective with regard to scale and positioning, creating situations that alter our perceptions of the everyday environment around us. Seeking to forge a reconnection between the individual and their environment, his typically witty works reconsider overlooked elements of urban design or public structure. Often involving the aesthetics of the construction site, his projects are literally concerned with processes of change, physically adjusting the viewer’s relationship to common sights and locations that they have almost become invisible.
Dont miss the opportunity to see this oversized chandelier illuminate the night sky. Daily from 5.3011pm at Curzon Circle, at the end of Curzon Street.
