From its early days as a one day street party, Birmingham Gay and Lesbian Pride has grow into a major event in Birmingham’s and the Gay calendar being the countries biggest Free Gay festival spanning over three days on the late May Bank Holiday.
The event is launched on the Saturday evening, with Birmingham Pride Carnival Parade starting off at 6.00pm from Victoria Square and winding its way through Birmingham City Centre down to the Gay Village in Hurst Street. Participants are invited to attend free Carnival Arts workshops, which take place throughout May, where they can learn to make costumes, masks, backpacks headdresses and push along floats under the watchful eye of professional artists.
On the parades arrival in the gay village the streets come alive with three days of free entertainment with mini-arenas, market stalls, fun fair and street entertainment. The event encapsulates a real party atmosphere, and not only hosts a number of live performers and DJ’s, but also provides a place for a family picnic on the increasingly popular community village green, a turfed space with entertainment ranging from tug of war to musical chairs, pet shows to live performance.
