SAMPAD
27 Aug-12 Sep 05
sampad – South Asian arts welcomes to the UK one of India’s top contemporary dance companies – Samudra (mirror of passion for dance). Touring for the first time, Samudra will perform Sound of Silence, a dynamic fusion of ancient and modern dance, inspired by Kalaripayattu, Bharatanatyam and Yoga. Kalaripayattu is believed to be one of the oldest existing martial arts in the world, representing inner peace and fluid animal movements. The UK gets the rare opportunity to see it in action as vibrant dance, live musicians and stunning visuals come together to create a breathtaking experience during August and September 2005.
Like Kalaripayattu, the company hail from the tropical state of Kerala. The company use different art forms to stage performances that are colourful and rhythmic with strong visual and musical aspects, including striking costumes and masks.
Samudra tour Sound of Silence in arts and rural venues, and outdoor festivals during August and September 2005 as well as hosting workshops at specific community venues and providing training for a selection of UK based dancers. The Birmingham leg of the tour is part of sampad and mac’s summer family event, Beats and Feet, which also features two of the region’s up and coming dance companies: Lola Adodo (African, contemporary, jazz, street dance and martial arts) and Patel Hithwardek Mandal Youth Group (fusion of Bollywood and traditional Gujarati dance). A free participatory workshop for all ages is also offered.
“Great success of the dancers and their millenary culture, The Sound of Silence is related to the real
culture of the people… even if you are far from that culture, even if it will not be easy for you to understand all the truth of Samudra, it is worth to live for one hour to a world so far away” La Nazione Umbra
