As part of Birmingham’s exciting Urban Fusion programme of events, Cineworld Cinemas proudly present The Big Picture Weekend, a celebration of new international cinema. Spilling out either side of the weekend into a six-day phenomenon, The Big Picture Weekend provides both food for thought and a feast for the eyes with an immensely varied selection of films.
It gathers together brilliant home-grown features such as THE LAST HANGMAN and Michael Winterbottom’s irreverant A COCK AND BULL STORY with choice titles from France, Germany, Canada, Australia, Korea and the USA. It mingles tense thrillers, like Atom Egoyan’s stylish WHERE THE TRUTH LIES or Michael Haneke’s nail-biting HIDDEN, with quiet masterpieces such as Ingmar Bergman’s SARABAND. And don’t miss the closing night film: George Clooney’s stunning political thriller GOOD NIGHT, AND GOOD LUCK.
Music is a recurrent theme in the programme, from the rock ‘n’ roll tale of a rolling stone in STONED to the ice-cool SCREAMING MASTERPIECE and its depiction of Iceland’s thriving music scene. The documentary genre, now more than ever, is proving itself worthy of the big screen, with the stunning Artic panoramas, ice storms and graceful penguin courtships of our opening night film, MARCH OF THE PENGUINS, reminding us that real life has some of the most compelling and visually impressive stories to tell. Meanwhile, fiction features such as GYPO and PAVEE LACKEEN take on a documentary role to deliver hard-hitting social truths in a stripped-down but nonetheless beautifully cinematic style.
The programme covers both debut directors and celebrated veterans, as well as giving space to very young filmmakers with FIRST LIGHT, a programme of short films whose imaginative energy and technical quality belie their creators’ youth.
