Vibes: The Roots of Urban Music

Vibes becomes a permanent display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in October 2005. This exhibition explores the roots of Urban music in the folk musical traditions of Africa and the Caribbean and their evolution in the West Midlands.

The exhibition will feature musical instruments from the Caribbean, Africa and objects from the musical history of the West Midlands. It will also feature hands-on computer interactive to explore the subject as well as a full-size reggae soundsystem.

The exhibition is the culmination of a long-term project at BM&AG to explore the roots and history of urban music. As part of this, instruments have been collected from Jamaica and Barbados which will form a key part of the display as well as joining the museum’s permanent collections.
