Programme
Bruno Maderna Serenata per un Satellite
Salvatore Sciarrino La bocca, Ipiedi, il suono
Luciano Berio Accordo
Bruno Maderna wrote his glittering Serenata for the European Space Operations Centre to celebrate the launch of a satellite. Like many of Maderna’s late pieces, the (visually beautiful) score gives the players a great deal of freedom.
Berio’s Accordo, for four wind bands with an unlimited number of players, evokes the atmosphere of an Italian village festival. Berio says it is many things: ‘a meeting…a small tribute to a great desire for peace on earth…a festival of Unity, a melody; a hommage to the musicians of the orchestras who meet in the evening and cast off the fatigue of a long day’s work’.
Sciarrino’s ‘The Mouth, the Feet, the Sound’, scored for over a hundred saxophones, is a magical experience: half musical, half theatrical, ‘like a torrent of raindrops or a distant flock of birds…haunting the space’.
