Black Voices, the Birmingham ‘born and bred’ a cappella group, has been running educational programmes and offering concerts, nationally and internationally, for the past 18 years.

As part of Birmingham City Council’s Urban Fusion programme, Black Voices and the Centre for Music and Arts Technology (CMAT) will be organising a Voice Festival to take place in venues around the city centre. This pilot project is very exciting and involves local and national singers as well as performers from Australia, Spain and Senegal.

Confirmed performers include:

International artistes:
CODA (female quintet, Barcelona)
Nuru Kane (superb male vocalist from Senegal/Paris)
Cloud Street (m/f duet from Australia)

Local and national artistes:
Black Voices, Milton Godfrey & Val Grant, The Academy of Gospel Singers, City of Birmingham Youth Voices, Birmingham Community Gospel Choir, Witches of Elswick, Kokuma, Juice Aleem, The Blackstones, Notorious, Phoenix Singers, UCE Chamber Choir and more.

Workshops and discussions will be led by Black Voices, Tina Brooks and Dr.Liz Garnett and Peter Daley from the Birmingham Conservatoire.

Throughout the weekend, singers will perform jazz, reggae, African traditional, pop, urban, gospel and spirituals, classical and Asian devotional music. The programme is a mixture of open singing workshops, concerts, discussions and a cappella videos and will be staged at the Birmingham Conservatoire, the Library Theatre, Birmingham Cathedral, the Birmingham Museum and the Stage Pub (late night concerts). All these venues are within 5 minutes walking distance of each other, allowing participants and visitors to enjoy as much as possible over the weekend.

The project is supported by Birmingham City Council (Urban Fusion), ACE, West Midlands, BBC Midlands, New Style FM, Earth Studios, Punch Records, Homer Creative, Mike Owen Media and University of Central England (UCE).
