Live / Work Project
The Public has received £75k from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Special Grants Programme for Sustainable Communities. Phase Two of this two-year project will run from June to August 2005.
Phase One of the Live/Work project, based at the X-Ray Factory in Smethwick in 2004, focused on the construction of prototype spaces, turning the factory into a creative hub of activity, inviting artists, architects and builders and members of the local community to come together, share ideas and experiment with building. A publication illustrating the first phase of the project will be launched during Phase Two.
2005 will see the second phase of this project take place in a disused building in the town centre of West Bromwich. The Unit, a 1960’s building that was formerly used as a place of worship, has been inactive for five years. Throughout June and July a group of artists and makers will remodel it into a versatile live/work environment.
Phase Two will explore the social factors that enhance a community’s experience of living and working together. By transforming a disused space into a place of activity and creative resource the project aims to enable people to become actively involved and engaged with the changes taking place in their immediate environment. The project encourages public participation in the development of building thriving communities. Phase Two of the project is supported by Urban Fusion.
