Conductor: Rolf Reuter
Three Cities Orchestra

An ambitious undertaking on the part of Birmingham Conservatoire and the conservatoires of Lyon and Frankfurt, the Three Cities project brings together 82 of Europe’s most talented music students, who will perform as one symphony orchestra in both Lyon’s Auditorium and Birmingham’s Symphony Hall in December. The project not only celebrates the close ties between Birmingham and her twinned cities, but provides a unique opportunity for Birmingham Conservatoire students to meet and perform with their contemporaries studying in France and Germany.

Distinguished German conductor Professor Rolf Reuter will conduct the Three Cities Orchestra in a programme of works showcasing one of each participating country’s greatest composers:

Britten: Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from Peter Grimes
Debussy: Iberia (from Images No. 2)
Beethoven: Symphony No. 7 in A major

Together, these works also illustrate beautifully the rich variety of colours and tones a symphony orchestra can achieve.

Ten days of intensive rehearsals in Lyon will be followed by the first Three Cities concert on 5 December in Lyon’s 2100-seat Auditorium, after which all the musicians involved will travel to Birmingham to give their final concert on 8 December in Birmingham’s magnificent Symphony Hall.

Sponsored by the City of Birmingham and the Urban Fusion Programme
