Vivid Projects

Various throughout May - July 2005

On 16 June 2005, Vivid launches an exciting new venue for the production and exhibition of media arts, bringing together technical resources and exhibition space in a unique environment. The launch programme of work is being presented in association with Arts Council’s Architecture Week 2005, and includes international and UK artists. Diverse in content, the launch offers a snapshot of the work Vivid supports through commissions for research and exhibition, artists’ residencies, public events and publications. Vivid has been supporting media artists for over twelve years and this new venture will be the first creative destination of this kind in Birmingham an environment for artists to showcase and test the production and exhibition of media and interdisciplinary art.

Heath Mill Lane is in the heart of Birmingham’s new Eastside quarter. Eschewing the notion of the white cube, with this space Vivid embraces the industrial heritage of the city through retaining the character and ambience of an industrial space. Whilst renovation will update the premises, key original features will remain. This conjunction of technology and industry reflects the crossovers which Vivid encourages through its artistic programme.

Yasmeen Baig-Clifford, Director of Vivid, said: “The new venue provides a fantastic opportunity for artists to exhibit their work, with the production support and back up of a media resource. Our commissioning programme will also be launched in 2005, providing further opportunities for national and international projects. We are delighted to finally be in a position to launch the work we produce right here at our Birmingham base. We aim to be at the forefront of changing attitudes and growing
expectations amongst both artists and audiences in the West Midlands.”.

Nigel Edmondson, Arts Ambassador for Eastside responded “The re-location of this established organisation to Eastside signals the very real buzz and energy in the emerging Eastside landscape. Vivid’s ambitious new programme of work will make a key contribution to the renaissance of the area”.

LAUNCH PROGRAMME:

MOBILETTE, NEW WORK BY CALUM STIRLING
27 May until 4 June, Open 1pm until 5pm daily
Vivid is pleased to present a solo show of work by artist Calum Stirling. This exhibition will mark the occasion of Vivid’s first public presentation in a new space. Mobilette comprises installations in a diverse range of media including sound, sculpture and technology to explore the connections between music, architecture and visual art. Stirling was a resident artist with Vivid in 2004, during which time he researched the city as a living, rhythmic organism. For his show at Vivid, Stirling will continue this line of enquiry to present a new body of work to explore his evolving relationship with sound, object and representation.

Highlights of the show include the newly commissioned Outopia, a large-scale video projection, which uses CCTV equipment to film an elaborate miniature cityscape of modernist model railway buildings on a slowly rotating carousel. This work continues Stirling’s research into a non-linear negotiation of space and the effects of the built environment on the way we process information. Calum Stirling lives and works in Glasgow, UK. His practice encompasses a wide variety of formats including, gallery exhibitions, sound design for television, and architectural product design. Recent solo and group exhibitions include The Generali Foundation (Vienna), Transmediale (Berlin), The National Gallery of Australia, CCC (Barcelona) and the CCA (Glasgow). Stirling’s work is currently on view in the show Transgressed Landscape at Fundació Espais d’Art Contemporani (Girona) curated by Lluis
Sabadell.
