As part of Ikon’s off-site programme there will be three screenings of video work selected from the Istanbul Biennial 2005. The weekly screenings involve works that are concerned with the nature of urban experience and identity. Artists include work by Halil Altindere, Daniel Bozhkov, Phil Collins, Hatice Guleryuz, Daniel Guzman, Ahmet Ogut, Solmaz Shahbazi and Wael Shawky.

Shawky’s video piece Cave features the artist walking around a local supermarket, reciting sections of the Koran. At first glance, the video appears much like a news broadcast. The artist walks between the aisles, talking directly to the camera, occasionally touching a shelf as he passes by, or toying with an item of fruit. Whereby, he is in fact, by rote delivering a passage from the Koran, the faultless flow of verse resulting from intensive religious education as a child.

This event has been organised within the Istanbul Biennial’s international Positionings Programme and is supported by the Anglo-Turkish Society.
