The European Lighting Designers’ Association (ELDA+) is running its first United Kingdom workshops in Eastside, Birmingham from 6 to 11 February 2006.
ELDA+ workshops have previously been held throughout Europe and overseas. The workshops are events about lighting designed to educate students and professionals, as well as private and public sector agencies and the general public, about lighting design and how it can contribute positively to the environment and enhance people’s sense of safety.
The theme of the ELDA+ Birmingham workshops is ‘ Eastside Story: celebrating the past and sustaining the future’, with the main topic being urban heritage lighting and design sustainability.
ELDA+ chose Birmingham as its first United Kingdom partner because the city had an ‘openness to developing modern lighting in public places’. Eastside, the city’s largest regeneration project, contains a range of sites that reflect Birmingham’s history and its future, and lend themselves to imaginative lighting installations.
The six project sites are typical of the area and include early and mid-20th century architecture, historical structures, a canal network and industrial streets. The installations will form the basis of the lighting festival which will follow on from the workshops and run until 26 February 2006.
Birmingham City Council is supporting the ELDA+ workshops and lighting festival because it believes that improved urban lighting schemes contribute to an improved environment for its citizens and visitors.
The workshops will be headed by six internationally renowned designers. The technical co-ordinator for the workshops is Martin Lupton from Building Design Partnership Lighting in London. Martin will liase with city council staff to realise the workshop projects.
Those taking part in the workshops at Island House in Eastside will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation, and the results will be documented.
The workshops will conclude with a conference on urban lighting on 10 February 2006 at Millennium Point. This will be in collaboration with the Society of Lighting and Light and the Institute of Lighting Engineers. The LUCI Association, a network of international cities dedicated to improving the standard of public lighting, will also hold a meeting in Birmingham during the workshops.
The lighting installations will be completed on and made accessible to the public on the evening of 10 February, when the lighting festival commences in Eastside. The lighting festival will then run until 26 February 2006. The event is supported by Urban Fusion.
Costs for participating in the six-day workshops will be approximately €1100 for professionals and €250 for students. ELDA+ members are entitled to a ten per cent discount on these prices. The prices do not include costs for accommodation.
