Three glorious ballets to music by Igor Stravinsky, forming BRB’s contribution to the second year of Birmingham’s Stravinsky Festival, part of its Urban Fusion programme.
Apollo
George Balanchine’s exquisite and timeless masterpiece was created for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1928. Apollo’s birth and the bestowing of gifts representing dance, song and poetry to the muses Calliope, Terpsichore and Polyhymnia are powerfully told through dance and music.
Pulcinella
The crafty Pulcinella always seems to get the girl – much to the frustration of the competition. Eventually, enraged by Pulcinella’s continued success in love, four young men prepare to execute a cunning revenge. This witty and surprising folk tale originated with the theatrical tradition of commedia dell’ arte. This new production is by Kim Brandstrup, the acclaimed choreographer and Artistic Director of Arc Dance Company.
The Firebird
In the eerie garden of the ogre Kastchei, a high tree bears an imprisoned princess and a golden apple. When, in a blaze of dazzling light, the stunning Firebird tries to steal the golden fruit, she is captured by Prince Ivan, who demands a feather from her glorious tail as protection against Kastchei’s evil. Armed with this magical feather, the prince sets out to save the princess and win her heart. The most famous of Stravinsky’s ballets, The Firebird is an enthralling story based on Russian legend that will delight all the family.
