Ikon Gallery launches a stunning new season of work at Ikon Eastside, its annexe in Birmingham’s Eastside regeneration district, with a series of works by John Smith and an installation by Japanese artist Takefumi Ichikawa. Located in an old Victorian Chapel and Sunday school, this former industrial space has been partially refurbished to create spaces for large scale installation and video screenings. Ikon’s programme of international cutting edge contemporary art will run from July – October 2006.

John Smith Selected Videos
This video programme demonstrates the extraordinary inventiveness of the acclaimed British artist John Smith. Each day will feature a different selection of work:
Thursdays: Associations (1975), Om (1986), Gargantuan (1992), Regression (1999) and The Girl Chewing Gum (1976).
Fridays: Black Tower (1985-7).
Saturdays: Hotel Diaries (2001-4).
Sundays: Lost Sound (with Graeme Miller) (1998–2001).

Takefumi Ichikawa Fuyu 2006
Ikon Eastside presents an installation by emerging Japanese artist Takefumi Ichikawa, involving thirty-five transparent plastic shapes filled with helium. Referred to by Ichikawa as ‘ghosts of sculpture’, their fragility is enhanced by the tough interior of this industrial building. They float almost invisibly, affected by the slightest movement of air, appealing to a profound sense of wonder.

A special launch night for Ikon Eastside will be held on Tuesday 25 July from 8.30pm until late with performances by Takefumi Ichikawa and Clippertyclop, a ‘Country and Deafness’ band that fuses brass-band arrangements with country music to present songs about dead dogs and other absurdities.
