BRAZIL-BIRMINGHAM COLLABORATION AS PART OF RSC’S COMPLETE WORKS FESTIVAL

13 actors from Brazil’s Nos do Morro Theatre Company and 9 young people
from Birmingham City Council’s arts based project Gallery 37, will work together for four weeks on a drama project as part of RSC’s The Complete Works Festival . Focussing on Shakespeare’s early play, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, the collaboration will result in a one-off ‘work in progress’ performance based on the play on August 27.

Youngsters from one of the toughest favelas in Rio de Janiero arrive in the UK to join forces with young people from Birmingham’s Gallery 37 aspart of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Complete Works Festival.

Brazil’s Nos do Morro Theatre Company is based in Vidigal – a favela in Rio de Janiero notorious for its widespread drug and gang
culture. Run by Brazillian actor and teacher, Gutti Fraga, Nos do Morro uses theatre to divert young people away from gangs, drugs and crime (some of its young actors can be seen in the award-winning film about life in the slums of Rio, City of God). The company was started by Fraga and has been working with RSC Voice Director, Cicely Berry, for over 10 years.
Gallery 37 is the largest arts based work experience programme in the UK, promoting access to arts, career development and training for young people. This is a fantastic opportunity for young poeple from Birmingham and Brazil to be part of such an ambitious and exploritory project.
